I’ve always loved the story of David in the Bible; a man after God’s own heart. The powerful story of love and redemption, heroism and war, and God’s wisdom always being higher than man’s comes to life for our children in this beautifully illustrated story.
While the story of David, if played out in a true-to-life cinematic format, would likely receive an “R” rating, the author, Philip Heider, did an amazing job to present the story of David with a “G” rating for younger audiences. It keeps the focus appropriately on David – none of his Mighty Men make an appearance – and the fact that David had a heart that yearned to please God. What impressed me is that Philip was able to explain that David was not a perfect man, but that his ultimate desire to please God was what made him a world changer.
With 32 pages, this book is easily read in one sitting to, or by, expectant kiddos, but it is divided into three parts for shorter reading moments. I find this to be a wonderful way to introduce young readers to chapter books. There is also a bonus seek-and-find in the illustrations!
Philip Heider did a fantastic job of presenting a well-known person from the Bible in a way that children can understand and even relate to. I recommend adding this book to your home and church library, giving as a gift and sharing with friends. This is a great introduction to David, a man after God’s own heart, and a true picture of God’s goodness and grace. I hope there will be more from Philip, making this one in a series of world changers.
