As someone who grew up in the church, hearing “God is love” and “love your enemy” lingo (among many others) reading Love is Action by Rhonda Sciortino added depth to what was already familiar. Growing up in the 80’s, a popular Christian saying was “love is a verb” and it has carried into my adult life. Reading those words in Rhonda’s book reminded me of so many ways we neglect to act out our love.
It’s often difficult to effectively show our love to those we live with. This book offers insights to ways to show genuine love to those who are nearest and dearest, but doesn’t begin to stop there. Rhonda walks us through ripple effects; showing love to self, to family and friends, to coworkers (even the janitor who is helping to send a man to the moon), to those in our community, and throughout the world.
This book is an excellent resource for ideas from the smallest of gestures to the grand. Acting in love can be as simple as holding open a door for someone, complimenting a stranger, or even a simple hello with a smile while making eye contact. Love as a verb is something we can all be doing. With the five primary love languages (cited from the author Dr. Gary Chapman), Rhonda assures that while actions of love may not look the same, the effects are always positive.
For anyone who is looking for ideas to get involved in their community, ideas for how to show genuine love to their own household members, or for encouragement that the “impossible” is actually possible, this book is for you.
