I’m not sure a review I write can articulate how well-written this book is based on the subject matter. The author, Charlene Khaghan, has taken a bold and courageous step forward because she first chose to take one tiny step forward after another. This book is a real asset for any child who has experienced loss, whether a family member or friend.
Before even starting the book, Charlene shares of the tragic loss she and her five children experienced: the unexpected death of her husband; the father of her children. Not only did she have her own grief coursing through her daily life, but her children did as well.
Charlene explains the purpose of this book better than I ever could by saying, “…it is okay to feel upset and to miss this person as they grieve; then, as life begins to move on, it is okay to once again feel happy and to enjoy life, as their loved one would have wanted for them.”
This book is heartbreakingly realistic. Charlene emphasizes the importance of having the freedom to express how we feel and acknowledges how easy it is to have memories come to mind that can reawaken the intense feelings of loss. She closes her note to the reader by saying, “Though each day may only be a tiny step forward, my hope is that the final stanza of this book will always remind readers that our loved ones are never truly gone as long as they live on in our hearts.”
A great resource for anyone dealing with grief or who is a grief counselor.
